Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

So, because the principle that puts this body through every kind of change and destroys it is time, they have gone on believing that time itself is Kāla, that it is Yama. Our culture has gone on teaching that this Kāla is the son of the Sun. That is, the doubt may again arise whether this Sun too has a wife, a household and children. That is, this time is born of the very rising and setting of the sun. And Citragupta stays hidden in this body, …, in a chief place, under the name citta. This hidden citta itself is also called Citragupta. So whatever saṅkalpas we make, they stick fast inside the citta. When someone asks you about some matter, you may hide it to some extent and speak Asatya, but the citta cannot speak Asatya.

Ṛta - Satya - Dharma

A thief may have gone to a house at night and stolen many goods; when the police catch him and beat him he may say, ‘I did not commit the theft,’ but the truth, ‘It was I who committed the theft last night,’ stays stuck fast in the citta. That very thing which has stuck fast in the citta is called Ṛta. Recognising our feeling clearly, and making that form of Satya stick fast in the citta: this very state is called Ṛta. Uttering in speech that nature which has stuck fast in the citta: just this is called Satya. Whatever words you uttered from your tongue, only when you carry them out in action is it called Dharma. Dharma means this: only when the three are bound together inseparably does the word Dharma have its full meaning. So we have developed many meanings for such sacred Dharma, and we are in a state where we cannot decide what is Dharma and what is Adharma.

Embodiments of the divine Ātma! In keeping with the tradition of guru and disciple, Bhaja Govindam is very famous within our culture of Bhārata, and of the greatest importance to jīvas. Because it is powerful for all of this age, from tomorrow — in what is called Bhaja Govindam, 30 ślokas — the supremely sacred moral teaching that the Jagadguru Ādi Śaṅkarācārya gave to the world is there in the Bhaja Govindam.
