Parting from the Good and Union with the Bad: Both Are Nothing but Sorrow

Kabīr too made a single namaskāram to this satsaṅga and to bad company: ‘O bad company! A namaskāram to you. O satsaṅga! A namaskāram to you’, and he said that both alike are worthy of namaskāram. Because he said both were worthy of namaskāram, the disciples who were near him questioned the guru in turn, ‘Swāmī! Are even the wicked worthy of namaskāram?’ Then Kabīr said, ‘My dear! The world has a sorrow from the bad as well. The world has a sorrow from the good as well. So that neither the bad nor the good may give the world sorrow, I am making namaskāram to both,’ he said. Then the disciples asked, ‘Swāmī, from the good only good comes to the world; surely there is no chance of anything bad happening?’ Then Kabīr, smiling gently, said, ‘My dear! Parting from the good and union with the bad cause great sorrow, so I am making namaskāram to both, that parting from the good may not come and union with the bad may not come.’ So, making namaskāram to both, that union with the bad and parting from the good may not happen, hoping that you will strive always for union with satsaṅga, and blessing you, I bring My talk to a close.
