so they prayed. So, keeping divinity in mind, and with the faith that in the heart of every single one dwells the Ātma that is that divinity, for us to think of them as friends is the right path. For us to set about this friendship on account of the state of the world, or of people's high positions, or of wealth, gold, possessions, vehicles and the like, is very bad. For us to make friends without looking at such things, recognising only the principle of the Ātma in their hearts: that is a most excellent path. In this regard, you may well know already, in many ways, about Kucela's friendship. In boyhood, in Sāndīpani's house, Kucela joined with Kṛṣṇa in games and songs and every kind of activity, in many ways. Because Kṛṣṇa was a great one, He was in the position of an emperor; yet Kucela went short of his daily food, and at last had no means even to feed his children, and was falling into great hardship; at such a time, one day, Kucela's wife: “Alas! How very hard it is to feed so many children! It is most necessary that you go once to see Kṛṣṇa, your boyhood friend, and win His grace. Go,” and with that his wife sent Kucela to Kṛṣṇa. Well then! When he reached the gate, the gatekeepers saw his dress; because he was very poor, they took him for a beggar, and so they held back a little from taking word to Kṛṣṇa. But Kucela, though the doubt, ‘What will they think if I tell them?’, troubled him, felt he had no choice but to say it: ‘I am Kṛṣṇa's boyhood friend. Take word to Kṛṣṇa that Kucela has come,’ he pleaded. The moment the news went in and Kṛṣṇa learned of it, Kṛṣṇa made every kind of arrangement and at once sent word to fetch him in. He saw Kṛṣṇa. The two talked over the games, the songs and the words they had shared in boyhood.
