Passage 5

In plain words

Do not beasts and birds and animals also eat? The body needs food; but we must not fall into the folly of pining all the time, “Food, food!” In a state lower than ours, so many crores of beings are being tormented; we must shape our life, as far as we can, into one that comes to the aid of such helpless ones a little, labours, and gives them help. Along with worldly learning, culture and moral qualities: these we must cultivate. The holy Rāmāyaṇa, the Bhārata, the Bhāgavata, the Bhagavad Gītā and other such texts, and holy texts such as the Bible and the Qur'an too, have always shown forth the Satya that builds up humanity.

Students today do not keep the aim of education before them at all. How are we to pass the examinations? How are we to get marks? That is the only path they walk; passing is not what matters most. Our duty is to recognise the aim that lies in education. Getting a degree is no great problem: you can copy and take a degree, you can set a book beside you, write, and get a degree, you can write all over your hands and legs and take a degree! Taking it by crooked ways like these is not true education. Students! Problems like these keep happening in many colleges. But you must recognise the difference between many colleges and our colleges. Truly, we did not resolve on these colleges for the sake of these worldly kinds of learning. We have no intention at all of handing out some B.A., some B.Com. or some B.Sc. Drawing you here on account of this education, we take you in only to make you the uplifters of the Bhārata to come, and through Satya, Dharma, Śānti and Prema to carry these ideals to the world. Were it not for this worldly education, your parents would not send you here. You would not come here.

Because a kind of craze for these worldly kinds of learning has grown in parents and in students, we established this college to satisfy that craze too, and through it to give them our ideals as well. In the Bhāgavatam, it is a thing you know! While Kṛṣṇa was up to many pranks, the gopīs and gopālas all kept coming to Yaśodā with complaints. So Yaśodā tried in many ways to teach Gopāla good sense. But teachings like these did not please Kṛṣṇa in any way. What He loved was butter. Apart from that He cared for nothing at all. So, to catch Kṛṣṇa, this Yaśodā would hold out butter in one hand, calling, “Kṛṣṇa, come, come, come and eat butter, come,” while behind her, in the other hand, she held a stick. She would show the butter and teach Him good sense with the stick. Today, in this problem of education, Swami has founded the college to give this kind of training to students sunk in the infatuation called education, showing them the butter called education and keeping behind Him the stick called discipline. Without discipline, human life falls into ruin. To cure the disease of the evil qualities, evil thoughts, evil worries and evil feelings that have entered you, we try to give the medicine called discipline in our hostel and in the college.
