In plain words
To this Śuka Maharṣi at once put a straight question. ‘Parīkṣit! Do you believe Kṛṣṇa is an ordinary man? Do you believe He is God?’ He asked. If you believe Kṛṣṇa is God, there will be no doubt in believing the Bhakti of the gopikās. If you think Kṛṣṇa is an ordinary cowherd boy, there is no use in telling you. So my Vedānta or Bhāgavata must be told to those who have faith in this. It must be told to those who believe ‘Anityam asukhaṃ lokaṃ’. There is no gain in pouring a little more water for one who is dead. Nor is there any need to make one who is healthy drink water. Those who are in great pain in between, neither dead nor alive, need someone else to hold them and give them water to drink. So, all the teachings that I give: those who are being swept along between Jñāna and ajñāna, you see, it is to them alone that I teach.
Embodiments of the divine Ātma! If we keep travelling the material way, we cannot reach the goal. Step by step, try to turn the outward vision inward. Hold hardship and comfort, loss, sorrow and worry to be illusions. Without hardships we do not get comforts. Keeping wealth safe is a great hardship. Spending it, too, is a great hardship. Hoarding it is very hard. We have no heart either to hoard it or to spend it. If you do not spend it, God thinks out a good plan for it. He gives a wicked son and has him spend it all. Otherwise He will not stay idle. God quietly ties on to him an adopted son at least, and through him has it all wasted. Before such circumstances come, be careful to do good and sacred works, deeds and outlays, and keep your heart joyful and free of care. Following this path, make a fitting effort to turn the Manas inward for the vision of the Ātma.
Members of the Sathya Sai institutions, make a fitting effort to raise your Bhakti and prapatti, step by step, to a higher level. Today the condition of the world has sunk very low. If the faith is to come that the world will improve, somewhat at least, it will be only through the world of believers. So, all you great heroes who are believers, with sacred feelings, at peace, embodiments of Prema, patient by nature, spend your time and do your karmas with compassion and kindness, and through them set about uplifting society and the community. God dwells in your very heart and watches every single act you do with a thousand eyes. You must not set about sin thinking that no one is watching. Even if no one is watching, He Himself is watching. I hope, and I bless you, that out of fear of sin and love for God you will make a fitting effort to follow the divine path.
