In plain words
Today one sees more wicked people with education than fools without it. All of you know this. They become hijackers, they become kidnappers, they go out as dacoits. Are all of these people without education? No! They are people who are well educated! So not all educated people do this. Nor are all the uneducated like that. The absence of the moral, the spiritual and the dhārmic from education is the root cause of such evils. Today education goes on mechanically, but there is no life or skill in it at all. Education must not stay like that. It must enter our feelings, our hearts, even our blood, with sacred feeling.
When quantity grows, quality falls
Today we do not take up education as a sacred responsibility. One must never neglect it, saying, "This is my responsibility only while I am a lecturer; after that it is up to each of them; I have nothing to do with it." The feeling "I am working for a salary" must leave the teacher's heart, and he must feel, "I have entered into this for life." Only when these sacred feelings and large hearts grow in the teachers can they serve the country. More than this, we must also understand something of the students' future. Today, under pressure from the government and from society, the institutions keep admitting students by the hundreds. As a result they do not have the right standard. In our institutions, if need be, we should set up two sections, but there must not be too many students. Each section should have only thirty or forty children. We must not drive sixty or eighty of them along like cattle.
