In plain words
Your children will make you happy." As for what teachers should be: they must turn the students into fine students who set right their own faults themselves. Only when we do this will the students become students who are an example. What all our teachers must chiefly recognise is that they must work hard to teach the moral, dhārmic and spiritual along with their subject. We must take care that no passion or agitation arises in the children. When this agitation comes, the children forget themselves. So we must not lead them into such a state.
We must recognise that our institution of learning is not a business
Above all, our teachers must recognise the truth that this institution of learning is not a business. Many private colleges take some trade as their base and turn education into a kind of business. But our institution was not founded with this intention. We began our institution with the sacred aim of shaping boys and girls into sacred examples, sending them to the four corners of the land, and rooting out the wrongs, the evil ways and the unrest in this country. My intention is that every student should become a Vivekānanda. To make such Vivekānandas, all of you must establish such sacred feelings in your hearts, at least in some small measure. You must think of all this as a spiritual institution. Without the spiritual, all this learning is merely useless learning. Today all the institutions outside fall into every kind of turmoil only because they have no spiritual bond of this kind. They do not understand what humanness is. They think a man is a man merely from his form, and make no effort at all to recognise human conduct. "I am a man. Mine is the human race. I live in humanness," they merely say, but there are very many who do not know the meaning of the word "man".
