Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

What is, is One. If we believe that in all things there is nothing but a portion of it, we shall not hurt anyone in any way. We are born as human beings. We are forgetting this humanness. Though all are human, among them the guṇas differ and so are of many kinds. We should not take birth as our main basis. We should take guṇa as the basis. The lotus was born in the mud. But though it was born in mud, that lotus comes to rest on the head of God. That place came to it in honour of its quality alone. That is why we must develop the principle of guṇa in our humanness. We must make no enquiry at all into our birth or our caste. What caste does the air belong to? We all breathe it! Is there one air for Brāhmaṇas, one air for Vaiśyas, one air for Kṣatriyas, one air for Śūdras? So the air we breathe has no caste. The air has no caste, the Gaṅgā has no caste. We all drink the water. In such a creation of God there are no differences at all among the five elements. The sky has no caste. Fire has no caste. The Gaṅgā has no caste. The air has no caste. What has caste? Only the earth has caste. That is why those who live on the earth alone keep up these differences of caste. If we think of this principle of the element earth as divinity, there is the word Bhūma in Vedānta. Bhūma means all-pervasiveness. We must experience such a principle of the earth. You may build a compound only round the one piece of ground you bought. You may set a boundary to it, saying, "All this is my house." You have set a boundary on the earth, but have you set up any compound in the sky, saying, "This much is for my house"? There is no boundary there! If a plane flies over your house in the sky, you cannot object. So, with nothing but narrow feeling, we lay down boundaries all over these lands and waste our time. Our learning, our strengths, our castes, our riches: all of it is fleeting.

Our very life is fleeting. No one can say in what moment it will leave and go. In such a state, in this transient thing, how much of our time we spoil with these likes and dislikes! We must not waste even half a moment of our precious time. In this modern age the lives of the young are sinking lower than dogs'. Even the dogs roaming the bazaar have some limits.
