In plain words
The reason is that there are no good thoughts in him. The power of these good thoughts is very lofty. Man is using this intellect only for selfishness, for his own ends. That is why, though he has intellect, man cannot give it its proper purpose and purity. Because selfishness and self-interest have gone beyond all bounds, all his actions are experiencing wrong paths. They are following them. Every step of man today strays from Dharma. Every practice is becoming empty of the form of action. In every thought, foresight is perishing. Every hope is turning into greed. His looks are becoming empty of Prema. His speech is moving far from Satya. Moral values are sinking day by day. Nothing but hatreds of caste and creed are stirring people up. Regional fanaticism and favour to kin: these are turning into nothing but deadly weapons. The awareness in man is cooling. Pomp, hatred and envy: these overstep every limit and roam at will. In place of the fear of sin, it is turning into a love of sin. People look on anything spiritual as a joke. What is the reason for this? That man desires only the worldly and the physical, believes in them alone, and loses morality and integrity. Failing to recognise even the power of the Ātma, the mind's own divinity, is the effect of nothing but bad thoughts. It is the work of greed. Today things have sunk to a state where man kills man. Between man and man things are in such a state that even if you lay green grass between them, it bursts into flame. What is the root cause of these hatreds? That thoughts are not right.
So man must try to nourish good thoughts. Only when the power of will joins with a potent life-force does the power of these thoughts take shape in the right state. When the power of will grows, then the power of decision, intellect, discrimination, grasp, speech, thinking and imagination, these seven powers, all stay merged in this power of will. This power of will is like a king among all these powers, among all desires. If this power of will is to grow, what must we do? We must reduce our desires. A small example.
