In plain words
Thoughts are very powerful. When a man develops such powerful thoughts, he can bring the whole world under his sway. Whatever thoughts we think, the very power of those thoughts becomes one with the man. When we develop bad thoughts within us, we have to live our life in a bad way. When we develop thoughts such as Prema, patience, sympathy and Satya in our heart, our whole life abounds in peace and security. When we develop our thoughts through vices such as anger, hatred, envy and Ahaṅkāra, our life falls into a foul and wretched state. A small example. Suppose we have an enemy. When we form ugly feelings about that enemy, a distorted form called anger takes shape from within us. When we form hostile feelings within us, we ourselves take on that hostile form. In the same way, when we have friends and dear ones and picture them with loving words and loving feelings, our heart swells, and in joy and delight of many kinds we feel ourselves one with them. When we develop Prema in our heart, our very life becomes full of Prema. When we develop vices such as hatred, envy and Ahaṅkāra, our whole life falls into a wretched state.
When a tree's roots have sunk deep, even if its branches are cut, they go on sprouting for a time. Once those roots are taken out, the branches can no longer sprout and grow again. In the same way, in this tree of life, rooted deep within us through roots such as hatred, envy and Ahaṅkāra, these do not die just because the branches on the surface are lopped off. They do not subside just because we hold down bad thoughts for the moment. The mind is made of these very thoughts, so only when we try to root out the mind itself do we gain real Śānti. As long as there is an ocean, the waves never stop. When the ocean itself vanishes, these waves too disappear; in the same way, in this ocean called the mind, the waves called thoughts keep rising without end and can never lie still.
