Passage 16

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

We pronounce only the words. The real meaning we do not recognise. So first of all we must recognise the letters in the words and the meaning in the letters; only then will you become the embodiment of the akṣara. Swallowing the akṣara inside and experiencing only the kṣara: this kind of show we keep building up. As long as this show remains, the principle of the Ātma stays very far away from him. Such people cannot recognise it though they take ten million births. First of all we must strengthen the faith, "I am a portion of God." I and God are not separate. We must make the right effort to develop and recognise the oneness of these two. Only then do we become people who have made the true Kṛṣṇa principle come forth in our hearts. So we must offer this citta to God, and make the right effort to make that principle of God come forth in the citta and to install it there.

They called Kṛṣṇa the butter thief. What is that butter? Our heart itself. To offer this heart is itself to receive God. His very taking of your heart to Himself we call His thieving. This is a name the devotees have given in fondness, but as for thieving, God is never a thief. When something of yours is taken away without your knowing, that may be called theft. But He tells you, asks you, and receives it through you yourself. You are deep in sleep. He longs for this: "Wake from your sleep and give Me what is yours." Uttiṣṭhata, jāgrata, prāpyavarānnibodhata: He rouses him, makes him alert, and receives Ānanda through his own hands. At such a time, how can He be a thief? A thief taking a thing while people sleep, without anyone knowing: that is called theft. So "thief" is only a name given to God in fondness; God is no thief. But to bring God down to our level and picture Him as having a wife, a house, a family in this way, failing to understand this rightly: this is complete Ajñāna. He took Māyā itself as His consort. If it is said that He created the world through that very consort, does He need a consort in order to create? Everything can be created by resolve alone. This is people bringing God down to their own level and trying to experience Him. As if Rāma wept and grieved because Sītā had gone to Laṅkā, unable to eat or sleep without her: what is this, such hysteria in God?
