In plain words
Many people write wills, ‘such and such a charity’. What of it? After death, that too has died. While you are still alive, give with your own hands and have the joy of it yourself. Every single thing we must do knowingly. Look, then step. Know, then bow. That is why even Tyāgarāja, the supreme devotee, ‘Telisi rāmacintana cēyavē’: “O mind, think of God knowingly. Do not try to remember Him somehow, unknowing, with the outlook of Ajñāna. Strive, keeping in mind that He is all-knowing, all-pervading, all-powerful,” he said. But devotees today describe Him beautifully as all-knowing, all-pervading, all-powerful, yet when it comes to putting it into their work, it all fizzles out. All our conduct today stays bounded by the pūjā room alone. As long as they are in this pūjā room, they are utterly at peace. They pray to God a great deal. The moment they step out of that room, all kinds of tempers flare up, against the servants, against this one and that one. This is not our true yoga. This is not our true dhyāna. This is not our true Bhakti. Satataṃ yoginaḥ. Unceasingly, we must dedicate our life with Śānti, with Prema, with Satya.
Before God they dance many a Bharatanāṭyam. This humility and obedience look like nothing but the disguises of Āṣāḍhabhūti. The moment they are a little out of sight, they take up the way of Durvāsa himself, or of Vasiṣṭha, or of Ambarīṣa, or some other way. To change like this is not good at all. We may change a few words to suit the occasion. But the heart we must not change. The heart of such people can only be called a demon's heart. So if we look like men but our conduct is the conduct of demons, how then can Divinity come to us? Today humanness is nowhere to be seen in the world. Many sādhakas all say, “We are searching for God, we are seeking God.” Why search for God, who is everywhere? Where would you search? He searches only because he is not a devotee. If he is a true devotee, he need not search. He Himself is everywhere. Today the devotee is not searching for God. God is searching for devotees. He searches, wondering where a true devotee is to be found.
