In plain words
Can nectar be made out of Kālakūṭa poison? Is it a game to scatter jasmine into a dreadful forest fire? Are kindly words any use before a brute? O host of virtues, why these talks of peace any more, Gopāla? Will the petty-minded Kauravas put aside their grudge and make common cause with us? Why waste time any more, instead of saying we are ready for war?
Who was it that wasted this time? Was it not Arjuna? Because his dice had not fallen his way, he turned round and kept urging Kṛṣṇa to be ready for war. The inner meaning of this is that the natures of jīvas keep coming to just this state. For their own selfish ends and their own advantage, they keep making efforts of many kinds. If those bear fruit, they say, ‘These are my strength and ability.’ If they fail, they say, ‘This is nothing but a lack of God's grace.’ But for what he has won, can he say, ‘This is God's grace’? He does not. It is just because such narrow feelings are in human nature that he cannot recognise this vast principle. So, when anything comes up as a matter of God, we must broaden it. This is what they called expansion of Love. Because, little by little, it was led into a narrow path, they called it merely contraction of Love. Today, even in worldly matters, people are developing broad feelings; but when it comes to matters concerning God, they go on nursing narrow feelings, along a very narrow path.
Today propagation in the form of practice is most necessary
People preach with an eye to what the audience wants; those who preach in the feeling that this is the true principle are very few. They strive for ways to delight people and draw them in.
