Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

To hold games without a plan of any kind is simply a laughable thing. No one is consulted. There is no committee for it. When there is not even a committee, how can one or two physical instructors look after it? Above all, interest in it has fallen. Trust in one another has wasted away. This is not right. Because of this, many troubles will have to be faced in the future.

Common sense and general knowledge are essential along with education

Between schooling and culture there is a great difference. Schooling may be no more than an acquaintance with books. It may sharpen the wits. But it is of no use for developing common sense and general knowledge. Along with education, common sense and general knowledge are essential. Truly, look at our Institute and everyone is a devotee! The Vice-Chancellor is a devotee, the Registrar is a devotee, the Controller is a devotee. Then all these professors are devotees. The Treasurer is a devotee. There are the students, and they are the greatest devotees. But if everyone is a devotee, where is the cause of this failing? In the villages of old people would put it so: ‘The bazaar is all Brāhmins! But our hen has gone missing,’ they would say. Among them are some Brāhmins who eat this hen. Otherwise there is no reason for the hen to go missing. In the same way, if today such a failing is happening in our Institute, where is the cause? If you find the key to it, the root cause is that there is no unity among us. If there were this unity, if the Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar, the Controller and the professors all came together, consulted one another and did the work, how happily it would go! There is no coming together at all; each one's work is his own. Like frogs in a well, each goes on doing his own work. They give no thought to this: that the wide world is watching our Institute with a thousand eyes.
