Passage 3

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

We wrongly take it that tyāga holds many hardships and losses. When we have let go of Ahaṅkāra and given up selfishness, whatever work we do is as good as done for the pleasure of God.

The embodiment of Prema must be seen through Prema alone

What is it that pleases God? God is the embodiment of Prema. God, the embodiment of Prema, wants Prema. To see the moon in the sky, only the moon's own light is needed. No torchlight or petromax lamp is needed. In the same way, the embodiment of Prema must be seen through Prema alone. Without Prema there is no life at all. Prema is the very breath of life. Prema is life. Prema is the form of the Paramātma. Prema is God. God is Prema. Live in Prema, live with Prema.

Only what brings purity of mind is true education

Today's students must learn the Dharma-śāstra and the principles of Jñāna and Prema, practise them themselves, become ideals, and then teach. If they go to tell another without practising it themselves, it becomes laughable. First they must fulfil their duties well in their own homes. They must gladden the hearts of their mothers and fathers. See only good. Hear only good. Think only good. Do only good. Speak well. Developing the wealth of good qualities in this way is true education. Mere acquaintance with books is not education. What brings purity of mind is true education. For purity of mind, moral, dhārmic and spiritual sādhanas are most necessary. These cannot live together, side by side, with worldly and material tendencies. Moral, dhārmic and spiritual tendencies are positive; material and worldly tendencies are negative. Only when we hold Manas, Buddhi, citta, the senses and the antaḥkaraṇa under our control can we be masters and owners. Otherwise we are only slaves! Birds, beasts and animals use their senses as they please and are content. If we too behave in just the same way, what difference is there between us and them? When one has been given a human birth, one must live in a way worthy of it. One who conducts himself free of ignorance is a human being.
