Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

True Prema must come from within the heart. A laugh put on only on the surface is a cinema laugh. Heartfelt Prema is divine Prema. In every being you must see the Paramātma in the form of Prema. You must serve that Paramātma. There is no gain merely in reading books and gaining material and worldly knowledge. If we take apart the word jñāna, jñā means Jñāna. Na means 'not'. That is to say, it means what is not true Jñāna, not eternal Jñāna. What is eternal and true is the Ātma alone. This alone is all-pervading. It is not understood by being told in words. For this, sādhana is needed.

We were born so as not to be born again

Being born, dying. Dying and being born must not be all our life is. We must not be born again and again any more. We were born so that we would not be born again. This is what we must know. This is the knowledge of the Ātma. Once born, one must not be born yet again. Today a newspaper, tomorrow waste paper. No one reads it. If a man has gone to jail and come out released, he must not go to jail again.

A man who stole and was caught was given ten years' hard punishment. The punishment was over. As soon as it was over, the jail officer said, it seems, ‘We are letting you go; pack up your bits and pieces and go home.’ The thief: ‘Why all this, sir! Let it all stay right here; I'll be back again tomorrow,’ he said, it seems. Even after ten years of punishment, he still wanted to come back to jail. His eye still on theft. We must not be thieves like this. We must not come again to the jail called birth. Ignorance itself is the theft. If this ignorance is destroyed, there is no birth again. We must contemplate the Paramātma. We must remember the Paramātma. We must sing His praise. We must serve the Paramātma. That is the way to make this birth worthwhile.
