In plain words

You need not give up everything. What we are given is two hands. What we have is one stomach. Are two hands not enough to fill one stomach? If we work with both hands to the full, will one stomach not be filled? If today we cannot fill our stomach, it is because we do not do the right work with both hands to the full. When we carry out our duties, the welfare of our karma is secure. So every man must try to light the lamp of his Ātma, his inner lamp.

Where must we light it? We must light it just where the darkness is. Where do we find darkness? Every moment we are filled with doubts. Doubt in the world. Doubt in the family. Whatever work we begin, doubt. Little by little it has crept all the way up to God. As long as this doubt is there, we will not gain what is called freedom. Students! You must gain the main strengths and abilities. You are masters, not peons. You must use the senses as slaves. All these senses must be under your control; you must not come under the control of the senses. When you come under the control of the senses, you become a slave and the sense becomes the master. So you must become masters. When we want to reach such a state, we must first drive away the darkness of ignorance within us. Once a Gopī longed for something. ‘Kṛṣṇa, all the Gopīs are making reports about your pranks to Mother Yaśodā. Yaśodā tries in many ways to catch you and punish you. You too keep running off to hide somewhere. You are dark. Only when you reach a dark place is your form hidden from Yaśodā. But wherever one looks, Yaśodā's house is white. That is why she finds you so quickly, catches you and punishes you. I will show you a special place; hide in it,’ she said. Which is that special place? ‘My heart is filled with a very dark ignorance. It is a dark place. If you enter it, that darkness will go. You can escape these blows. In both, the right work is done. You escape punishment. The light in me grows. Wherever you are, there is light. Where you are, darkness cannot be. You are not in my heart; that is why darkness surrounds it. So, Kṛṣṇa, install yourself in my heart,’ she prayed.

That is why they have said that God dwells in the heart of every man. As I said this morning, ‘dwelling in the heart’ means that God is installed in Prema itself. However many kinds of social service we do, however many kinds of office we hold, whatever high positions we reach, if there is impurity in the mind we cannot enjoy anything at all.
