Passage 3

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The divinity in all things is one and the same. This divinity shines resplendent in everyone. There is fire. In this fire there is the power to burn. Though it is there, because we are a little careless, the ash that comes from the fire covers the fire. Where did this dust that covered it come from? It came from the fire itself. This ash that came from the fire covers the fire itself. Then what must we do to see the fire again? If we go "phoo", the ash on top goes away. The fire becomes visible to us. In just the same way, in every human being there is the bright fire called the Ātma. We are forgetting it. Because of what? Because the ash of the difference of vehicles covers it, we forget the Ātma. When we separate it off by sādhana and such practices, we can behold it.

Another matter: there is a phrase, ‘rame rāme manorame’. They have said that its holiness is the essence of the Sahasranāma. Many pandits and learned men have been giving many kinds of meaning to it. The right meaning of ‘rame rāme manorame’ is to make the mind delight in God; that is all. Today we make the mind delight in many objects and meditate "Rāma, Rāma". Thinking is one thing. Delighting is another. To unite the mind with God, that alone is true devotion to Rāma. That is the right meaning of the phrase ‘rame rāme manorame’. We must also take some meaning for the word "Rāma". "Rā" means the principle of Parabrahman. "Ma" means Prakṛti. So this Prakṛti cannot stay apart from the supreme principle. That itself is the right message given on Guru Pūrṇimā day.

Prakṛti is joined with pure consciousness. That is why all of Prakṛti is made of substances. What is hidden within these substances is the power of the Ātma. In science they have called this energy. This they have called matter. Energy is what is always there. This is not physical energy. This is energy that is the pure principle. That is always there. That is why Matter + Being = GOD. Our energy today is wasting away day by day, moment by moment. Through words, energy of many kinds is being wasted. Through our sight the power within us is dwindling. Through our hearing the energy within us is wasting away. Through our thoughts the energy within us is dwindling. In this way, in every act a man does, in every look and in every word, energy is being wasted. This is the energy of Prakṛti. Divine energy never wastes away, never diminishes and never grows. So there is never any parting of Prakṛti and the Paramātma. We must look on the whole of Prakṛti as the form of the Paramātma.
