In plain words
For such people no good end ever comes at all. Believe the happiness of others to be your own happiness. True Bhakti and surrender lie within our following the path of Satya in daily life. To preserve the ancient traditions and the culture that shine as eternal truth, in keeping with the times, and to live them in the right way: that is the chief Bhakti and surrender of today.
We must nourish our traditions in the right way. We must protect our culture. To nourish the wholeness in life is the chief aim of our culture. To make this wholeness blossom is true culture. In the Bhagavad Gītā, in the eighteenth chapter, in the sixty-first śloka, He set forth the true form in which He abides. He went on giving out His glory. Īśvara sarvabhūtānām: I am the One who dwells in all beings. Not merely in some one being. Whomever you revile, it is as good as reviling God. Whomever you criticise, it is just as though you criticised God. Whomever you love, it is as good as loving God. We must develop this sacred faith. But without such faith, the more we go on fostering the dual feeling that God is separate from us, the lower our life sinks. We must not waste our whole life in the dual feeling itself. Pūjās must indeed be done. Japa must indeed be practised. Jñāna must indeed be acquired. But we should not keep leaning on these alone, however long. We must go on to a higher level. From karma to upāsana, and from upāsana we must reach Jñāna. From Dvaita to Viśiṣṭādvaita, and from Viśiṣṭādvaita we must enter Advaita. So until we come to such a state of Advaita, we cannot understand the principle of the Ātma at all. Bairāgi Śāstri said this. 'If you want to know Swami, you must become Swami.' He also said that each person's good and bad are known to that person alone, and not to others. But though others may not know, does not Īśvara know? You may keep it from the knowledge of others, you may hide it from others, but it is not a thing to hide from God. So to hide things from God is a folly. It is a betrayal. For anyone at all there is atonement for a wrong, but for one who hides from Divinity there is no atonement. So never try at all to hide anything from God. Before God, everything must be offered up, in a certain way, in this. We must seek the right path for our life to reach a high and sacred goal. For how long now we have been listening to this principle of the Ātma, this principle of Brahman! We reflect on it. We do not practise nididhyāsa. However long it may be, we must not keep this in illusion through the delusion that we are the body, and so fall prey to unrest ourselves too.
Little by little we must go on forgetting the feeling that we are the body and the senses. We must try to bring it under control.
