In plain words

First of all we must understand the sameness that says: as our sorrows, our joy, our pleasure and our happiness are to us, so are the joy, pleasure and happiness of others to them. Great men who gave such an ideal path are found in plenty in this land of Bhārata. And among the English too you will have seen many. Socrates was a great Vedāntin. At all times he would keep contemplating this very oneness. Contemplating on what is called this oneness, with that alone as his inquiry, that alone at all times, he would try to recognise its sameness. He understood the principle of looking on both trouble and pleasure with sameness. One day he was sitting on a chair on the front veranda, thinking with his eyes closed. Thinking and thinking of the mahāvākya Tat tvam asi, of the mahāvākya Ahaṃ brahmāsmi, and of the principle Eko'haṃ bahu syām, he was sunk deep. It was time for the meal. From inside, the lady of his house called, "Listen! I have served the food; come quickly." He did not hear. She shouted louder. She went near and called. But the one who was thinking stayed in his thought. Tears of joy were falling. He took no notice of her words. Wondering whether he was asleep, or lost in rapture, or drunk, or out of his mind, she ran inside. She brought a pot of water and poured it over his head. Socrates got up. "Every day there was merely thunder, and it only thundered. Today a downpour has fallen," he said. That is, he felt no rage or heat at all that his wife had done such a thing. He took it calmly, thinking, "This is a shower." Only when we have feelings that adjust in this way do we become fit to do right and ideal services in society. To hate one another, to foster envy of one another: this is against our organisations. We must all grow up like the children of one mother. We must believe all to be embodiments of the one Ātma. Only then can we develop zeal and encouragement in service too. However much wealth we may have, however high an officer we may be, in service at least we must believe that all are one. What is this wealth? What are these positions? What are these powers? How long will they last? With these positions, this wealth and these powers there is nothing at all that we gain. What has to come will come. What has to go will go. But God's grace alone is what never goes from us. Nor does it come. That is, here it is not the principle that God is separate and I am separate. We cannot foster God merely as a Relationship. Some people: You alone are mother and father, You alone are my companion and my shadow, You alone are God, You alone are friend, You alone are guru.
