Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

We go on following them. No one makes the least effort to inquire for himself how his own Buddhi, Manas and conduct are. One must inquire into oneself. One must recognise one’s own principle oneself. Only then does humanness become fulfilled. So we must not forget the place we came from. That itself is, for us, the immortality that is eternal Satya. That is the principle of Ānanda. That is eternity. Forgetting that deathless immortality, we sink into untruth and fall prey to unrest of many kinds.

Students! Some day you must become ideal mothers. You must teach your children and your fellow men the right path. Family life is something we must indeed look to, but it is not something to love. What is to be loved is the Ātma-principle alone, which is the principle of Prema. We may enjoy family life. But to desire it is a great mistake. At such a sacred age we must hear good words. We must do good deeds. We must lead a good life. That is the fulfilment fit for humanness. I keep saying from time to time:

Listen to one word, listen to one good word; not listening to the word, you play crazy games; human birth does not come again and again; the path is but one… do not you forsake it. (Listen…)

We must hear good words. We must think of good things. We must give good teachings. We must keep to good conduct. This is true education. Education does not mean acquaintance with books. I have said this many times. In the world, materially, in practical life, these kinds of learning are necessary for us in their way. But in the spiritual life we must try to recognise the true principle that lies beyond these kinds of learning. What we must recognise today is the goal. Only then does life become blessed. Every day, for at least some time, try to remember the Lord’s Name. What we need in the world today are two things, only two. One is dāna, the second is the Name. Dāna. Which dāna? Annadāna. The Name. Which Name? Hari’s Name. Hari’s Name alone is the boat of our life. Annadāna alone is the goal of our life. Because only when we give food in dāna, with the body that is made of food, is Hari’s Name installed in the heart. The Ātma does not mean something apart. It is our very heart that the Śrutis have named ‘Ātma’. This Ātma is a name the Śrutis gave, not a name you gave. It is not something someone or other gave. When asked what your name is, it is not giving yourself names in this way: “My name is Rāma,” “My name is Kṛṣṇa,” “My name is Suśīla, Puṣpa.” These are names the parents gave. When asked what your name is, your name is first of all the heart itself, the Ātma, Ānanda, immortality. We must try to keep that name, which is eternal Satya. This is a name true to its meaning.

Tyāgarāja’s too is a name true to its meaning.
