Passage 7

In plain words

The guru, and all of you who are like a father and like God to us, we killed without mercy. Now what right have I to call myself king? Those who have done such sinful deeds have no right at all to rule,” he lamented. Then Bhīṣma began. “Dharmaja! The one who killed is not you. The one who died is not I. Birth and death do not rest with man. All is full of Viṣṇu. Everything is God's will! He who gives birth, He who sustains, He who protects: all of it is God! All these are bodies that are mere instruments. You are taking this as your ground. These are inert. They have no consciousness. If you set down an inert piece of iron, it cannot move. But if you set the magnet called consciousness near it, it moves whichever way you move that. When the piece of iron moves, you think it is life. No, no. Because the consciousness called divinity is near at hand, it moves by that magnet. It fills everything, everywhere. That is why they said, ‘Sarvataḥ pāṇipādaṃ tat sarvatokṣi śiro mukham’. Without believing in the divinity that is there wherever you look, you go on saying only ‘I, I’ and take the shape of the body to be yourself. As far away as you think God is, just that far away God is. As near as you think He is, that near He is. He put one thing subtly. As near as you are to yourself, so near is God to you. So divinity is not something apart.”

All beings are forms of God!

Everything happens by God's will alone. This is the chief fruit of karma. You fall into straits like these in keeping with what is called the fruit of karma. Every person experiences the result of the karmas he himself has done. For every person, every matter and every object there is a reaction, a resound and a reflection.
