Passage 19

In plain words

This is not a quality the Institute should have. It is not what matters, to wear white clothes on the outside. We must earn whiteness within as well. We must keep clean every hostel we live in. Otherwise we will fall ill. Health is the greatest wealth; so in our Institute you must become model students not only in your studies, not only in games, but in every field.

I wanted to say all this when the meeting was held at our Institute the other day, but the outside public would all be there. So I kept quiet, thinking it very necessary to keep our own matters to ourselves. Today there are only our own people, so I have had to say it. That is why the elders said: keep the family's matters close, but make an illness known. This is our family, and so it is our household. It was only to keep it close and protect it that I could not say all these things in the auditorium that day.

There are three reasons for saying that health is the greatest wealth. Vāta, pitta and śleṣma. When the three are in balance, sound health comes. All three must be in balance in our body. Then our body is in full health. If any one of them falls or rises even a little, health breaks down. So, if we want to keep these three balanced, what must we do? We must eat well. We must play well. We must study well. In these three they come fully into balance. If you simply eat up to the throat, your health is ruined. You must not just eat and sit. You must work twice as hard as what you have eaten calls for. Only then is the food digested. Only when that digestive power is full does health come. So eat properly; I do not tell you not to eat. But after eating you must not sit like a grinding stone. We must do some work worthy of what we have eaten. That is why they have said, work is worship. We must do our own work well. We must clean our home. We must clean our bathrooms.
