Passage 5

In plain words

The year is not something made up of seconds, minutes, hours, days and months. Each moment is itself a year. Without sixty seconds there is no minute. Without minutes there are no hours. Without hours there are no days. Without days there are no months. Without months there is no year. So there is no need to wait twelve months for a new year. It is not a new year. It is a new second. So we must take every moment as new and go on spending every moment with new feelings. With new feelings, with new enthusiasm, with sacred thoughts, we must go on spending this moment. Moment by moment, one must examine the bad qualities and bad feelings within oneself. One must develop good qualities and good feelings.

Embodiments of Prema! From ancient times Bhārata has been teaching ideals of many kinds, and sacredness. Not only the body made of the five elements, not only the principle of the five elements, but the divinity that is one everywhere: this too it has been teaching. Today we have given up such sacred, pure and selfless feelings, taken to transient and unsteady ones, and are wasting our humanness.

Now, Pradyumna. Who is this Pradyumna? All these are names of Manmatha. If you ask who this Manmatha is, He is God Himself. He is the one who draws all to Himself. He is the one of surpassing beauty. Such divine power is in every atom. Hate no one. We must hurt no one. The divinity in everyone is Godhood itself. The forms may be different. Smaller than the smallest, greater than the greatest. The sun is one, yet at different times it sends out its heat in different ways. In the same way God appears in many ways. God has many forms and many names, but the oneness within the manyness is one. That is divinity.

The human birth is most sacred. Man's form is most sacred. So one must strive to make every limb worthwhile. Professor Anil Kumar has said it. The fault of speech, the fault of action, the fault of sight, the fault of feeling, the fault of hearing. The fault of speech is the chief of them. God gave two eyes. He gave two ears; you may hear as many things as you need. But these have no doors. But He gave only one mouth. That is why: ‘Measured speech, great ease. Too much speech, harm to the mind,’ they said. Within measured speech, what is needed still more is kindly speech. Beyond that, never speak to anyone words that hurt others. Man has not time enough to read even one of the 18 Purāṇas.
