Passage 4

In plain words

He waters the land well, ploughs it, works it into tilth, puts in manure, cultivates it and makes it soft, and in it he sets the seedlings to be planted or the seeds to be sown. After they come up as plants, he weeds, keeps watch and protects them, and only so does he carry the harvest home. This is the cultivation of the heart we must do today. The heart is a field. We must cultivate this field in the right way. We must fill it with the water of Prema. We must plough it with the plough of inquiry. We must sow in it the seed of God's Name. We must put up the fence of vigilance. We must keep guarding it with freedom from Ahaṅkāra. Only then are we able to receive this fruit of Prema.

Students! On the tree of every human life, too, there is the fruit of Prema. If we are to enjoy this Prema, there is a skin covering it. Only when we take off that skin do we come by the sweet juice inside. There is the sweet lime. Or there is the orange. We must take off the skin on it. Then we must pick out the seeds inside it. There is useless pulp in it. That too we must push out. We must take the juice alone. This is Raso vai saḥ. We must remember that God has given us the fruit of life so that we may receive this juice. First of all we must peel off the skin of pomp and Ahaṅkāra. We must throw out the seeds of evil intentions, evil thoughts and evil deeds. We must throw away the fibre of possessiveness too. Only then do we come by the juice of Prema. So the sādhana we must do today is this. Every person is a farmer. Every heart is a kind of field. We must not waste this field. If we keep land and leave it uncultivated, what use is it to have this land? This is a sacred field indeed. But because we fail to cultivate it properly, it is turning into fallow land. Whatever you sow in this fallow land, it is of no use. This is a vast land. No one can even say how many acres it is. Whatever its acres, what use is it? We are unable to raise the crop we need.

However much he studies, whatever his station, the base man cannot give up his vices.

We are in no state to set our own field right.
