Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

So, taking selfless Prema as our support, we must live in this world, the supported, and enter the sacred path that makes the two, the support and the supported, one.

One is the material cause. The second is the instrumental cause. The instrumental cause belongs to the world. The material cause belongs to the Divine. So this whole world is made up of the instrumental and the material causes. This tumbler is a silver tumbler. But the silver is the material cause. The goldsmith who made it into a tumbler is the instrumental cause. The One who created this silver is no one else. It is God. The one who made it into a tumbler, however, lives in this world. Today you can keep it as a tumbler. Tomorrow you can change it into a cup. The day after, you can change it into a plate. Though the forms and names change, tumbler, cup and plate, the silver stays silver. That is the material cause. In sum, the One who does not change is God. What changes is the world. In the moving world there is the unmoving Divinity. This world is made up of these two. You see this in many ways in your daily experience. When we sit in a bus or a car, we go rushing along. This car is moving on the road, but the road is not moving. If the road moved too, we would meet with an accident. So we travel in the moving car on the road that does not move. In the same way, the road is steady. This is the material cause. The moving car is the instrumental cause. So this whole moving world rests on the unmoving material cause called Divinity. No one tries either to understand it or to inquire into it. Truly, though this is a moving world, if we understand well the one thing called Divinity, what can this body do to us? However many troubles, losses and sorrows it is made up of, we need not fear it at all. How can the depth of the water frighten one who has learnt to swim? If we learn to swim, we need not fear the depth of the water. In the same way, if we earn Prema for God, need we fear the changes that come in this world? The Gopīs were those who won such Prema. God is Prema in form. According to time and circumstance He seems to change a little, but those are not changes in God. It is the changes in the devotees that are reflected back to them as a reflection. That is called guilty conscience. They try to see God with their own faults fitted on to Him. There can be no faults whatever in God. He is without fault. That is why they said, Nirdoṣo nirmalo nāthaḥ.
