Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Only when parents are on a good path will the children follow a good path. So parents, along with the teachers, must strive as they should to give students a fitting, exemplary life.

In my experience I have looked into this in every way. It is the parents who are spoiling these children. Theirs does not shine as true Prema. They are proving it an artificial Prema. Children must truly make progress. They must become exemplary students. If they had only the good saṃskāras that say, 'We must shape them into the citizens of the future', they would not spoil the children like this. If the children are doing some bhajan, or meditating, or doing japa, they torment them with all kinds of words. Their idea is this: 'Why do you want this at this young age, boy? Do a job well, and just before you retire, just before you go off to some cremation ground, you can take up the japa beads.' Start early. drive slowly. reach safely. It is in our young days that we must develop good qualities. The qualities developed in our young days in that way are the ones that stay in us for ever. So students must set about living their lives on the spiritual path, on the path of Dharma, with conduct that is true. It does not matter how anyone thinks of it. We ourselves are the witness of our own heart. So, with the heart as witness, you must foster in yourselves the faith that we are pure. We should make no effort at all just to get acquainted with books. Today they merely think the book and the head are one and the same. As much experience as this book has, just so much experience will you have too. We must put it into practice. We must show it in practice in our daily life. Only then shall we understand the excellence of that education. How many learned people there are in the world! But what have they all achieved? Peace of mind is nil. Only when you add saṃskāra to the learning you have studied and put it into practice will you have peace of mind.

Students, embodiments of Prema! Along with your learning you must learn humility and obedience and exemplary conduct too. Without morality our race will decline badly. So we must enter the path of morality, and you must sustain a sacred human race. That itself is the sacrifice you must make. Do not try to live merely for selfishness and self-interest, like a drop on the water. Do not believe that money alone is what matters. Money comes and goes. morality Comes and grows. So we must strive as we should to develop this morality. We must win fitting fame and honour for the parents who gave us birth, too. That a son is born is not joy to the parents. The day the son who was born wins great fame in society, the day he wins a great name: that day alone is the son's birthday.
