In just the same way, when it is joined with saṅkalpa and vikalpa, they have called it by one name, Manas. When it enquires into things with discriminating knowledge and decides, they have called it by the name Buddhi. This is enquiry carried out purely with discriminating knowledge. They call it discrimination knowledge. Then the third is citta. It is of the nature of memory. That is why it got the name citta. The form that comes about when Manas identifies itself with the body they have called Ahaṅkāra. The one Manas has shown itself in so many works, in so many places, taking so many kinds of names.
Manas alone is the cause of everything. This whole world, too, is bound up by Manas. 'Manomūlam idaṃ jagat': nowhere at all can you find anything without Manas. Because he has such a Manas, he got the name manuṣya, man. 'Yad bhāvaṃ tad bhavati': as this man's feeling is, so too will its results be. This is just what they said in the English language: 'So think is the man so is the man.' Humanness is bound up only with a frame of mind. What is Manas? Manas means man himself; man means Manas itself. Manas means nothing but the gathering of saṅkalpas and vikalpas. Man's actions are the very result of these saṅkalpas. The pleasure and pain we go through every day are just the effect of these actions. The good and bad of the world rest on the actions of man. What is the basis of these actions? Saṅkalpas. That is why life takes shape as the right kind of life only when man's saṅkalpas are good saṅkalpas.
Saṅkalpas are very powerful. Even when a man dies, the saṅkalpas stay fixed. That is why we must carry out the right sādhana for those saṅkalpas. We must see that bad saṅkalpas do not arise in us. It is because of this that the principle of Prema between man and man has withered away. They have forgotten the principle of the Ātma that is between man and man. When you recognise that the principle of the Ātma in all is one, this difference will not be there at all. So humanness begins in one's own person, enters society, spreads through the country and ends in the universe.
