Passage 8

In plain words

They have also thought of it as Māyā. It is like a cat. When we enquire well into this cat, the effect of this Manas, too, fits it exactly. To protect its kittens, the cat takes them in its mouth, carries them off and brings them to a safe place. When it takes a rat in that same mouth, it kills it. It is one and the same mouth; here, because they are 'my young ones', it brings them to a safe place. Thinking, 'This is my food', it punishes the rats soundly. Manas too is like that. Those who think of God, those who do good deeds, those who have good minds, those who stay on the good path: these it brings along a sacred path to a safe place. When it sees the wicked, the evil-doers, and those who behave in Adharma, it torments them. So though Manas is only one, it takes shape in many ways. This is just what they call mono act. It puts on many kinds of forms. For each saṅkalpa it puts on the form of that saṅkalpa. In the world today, the cause of man's troubles, losses and sufferings is nothing but each one's own saṅkalpas. With saṅkalpas we can do anything at all. If we have caught even a speck of fire, if we have strengthened just our śraddhā, we can make it grow into as big a fire as we need. This is what we mean when we say God made a saṅkalpa. Eko'haṃ bahu syām. Making a saṅkalpa by Himself, oneness turned into manyness. And they have gone on making the oneness in the manyness again.

For both, the oneness in the manyness and the manyness in the oneness, saṅkalpa itself is the root cause. That is why we must foster our saṅkalpas along a sacred path. The moment a saṅkalpa rises from us, we must think whether it is right or not. But man in his haste gives no chance at all to this matter. The haste is great. Everything must be had the moment it is wished for. Everything must be had. That is why: Haste makes waste; waste makes worry. So do not be in hurry. In a matter of this kind we must hand it over to Buddhi properly and calmly, and only after Buddhi's enquiry must we decide it. Only then will we gain Śānti.
