In plain words
That is the one light. That is the light of the Ātma. What is, is one alone; over it we have put the vessel called the body, with nine holes, so the lights appear in many ways. From each hole it looks as if there were a light of its own. There are not many lights there. What is, is one light. But through the holes of the body these appear as many lights. Over this we have thrown the thick cloth called possessiveness. It is a cloth woven of these two: the possessiveness that says 'mine' and the Ahaṅkāra that says 'I'. If we take those two off and throw them away, and through that keep the delusion of the body under control, that is Ekohaṃ bahusyāṃ. The oneness itself takes shape as the manifold.
Students! This Manas, Buddhi, citta and Ahaṅkāra: the joining of these four is the antaḥkaraṇa. But what is this antaḥkaraṇa? Karaṇa means instruments, the senses. Antaḥkaraṇa means the inner senses. In Vedānta we describe the antaḥkaraṇa in many ways. The eyes see outside. The ears hear outside. The mouth speaks outside. The hands work outside. The nose only smells outside. But all of these have some form. The Manas has no form. The Buddhi has no form. The citta has no form. The Ahaṅkāra has no form. The combined form of these formless inner instruments is precisely the form of the living being. It has four kinds of faults. One is delusion. The second is mishap. The third is karaṇāpāṭhana. The fourth is vipralipsa. These four faults alone soil the antaḥkaraṇa. The first is delusion. What kind of thing is this illusion? Seeing a rope and thinking it a snake, seeing a snake and thinking it a rope. Seeing the eternal and taking it as the passing. Seeing the passing and believing it eternal: it is through illusion of this kind that mishap occurs. If you take a snake for a rope and grab it, what can it turn into but a mishap? Today man believes that the body is real. No, no; it is merely like a bubble of water. Some time, somewhere, in some way, it bursts. It is not real. It is not real. It is merely a skeleton. Excrement, urine, foul smell, flesh and blood, yes; but musk and civet will never come out of it. So we are forgetting that power to use a body like this in the right way.
