Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

That is why: 'Aṇoraṇīyān mahato mahīyān.' To make a thing grow from the atom to the vast, śraddhā is most necessary. But man has śraddhā; on what is his śraddhā? He has śraddhā in the fruits. But he has no śraddhā in the work. That is the spirit of work. This has worn thin in man. With the growth of this science, man has grown used to comfort, increased his laziness, and is wearing down his śraddhā little by little. Science is not bad. But in man's use of it, it takes the wrong road. In every matter we are breaking sacred Prema into pieces. That is why we must develop this Prema on the spiritual path. We must show it to be oneness. For this very thing, spreading it is most necessary today. If you want to tell the difference between spirituality and science in a word, it is just one sentence. Spirit of Love: this is spirituality. Split of Love: this is science. See how great the difference in it is! What is there is a tiny bit. But it is full of endless meaning. This science keeps giving us worldly pleasures and riches, comforts and conveniences. But what man needs is inner Ānanda. What he desires is Ānanda. What he strives for is for the sake of Ānanda.

But is that Ānanda in things and vehicles? Is it in the senses? When the very things that give Ānanda are impermanent, how can this eternal Ānanda be had by you? So the thing that gives is impermanent; the body that enjoys is impermanent. The land we live in is impermanent. So if we want to enjoy lasting Ānanda, we must keep the principle of the Manas in the right way. Today's scientific knowledge, moral and physical and spiritual advances, political evolution, economic evolution, scientific evolution, worldly evolution: all have developed. Only the evolution of the Manas has not developed. After this evolution of the Manas, spiritual evolution too is most necessary. But where does this Manas spring from in us? What is its birthplace? Though we enquire and take up any dictionaries, they do not get into our heads. If we enquire simply, this Manas develops in the very food we eat in daily life. After we have digested the food we take, part of it goes out in gross form as waste. This subtle food itself turns into blood and flesh.
