In plain words
such things must not enter the hearts of men. Among students, still less must they enter. Knowing that Manas itself is the cause of this fault, we must make the right effort to punish Manas. When we feel that something is wrong, we must try not to do that wrong. Otherwise, doing wrong and repenting, + - + - + - = 0: there is nothing there.
So today, whatever injustice and whatever wrongdoing and misconduct are going on in this world, Manas alone is the cause of it all. That is why: 'Mana yēva manuṣyānāṃ kāraṇaṃ bandhamōkṣayōḥ'. For bondage and for liberation, Manas alone is the root cause. Today we must turn Manas from the outlook of nature towards the supreme principle. I have said this to us many times. There is a lock. A lock, and there is a key. Put the key into that lock and turn it to the right side: it opens. Turn it to the left side: it locks. same Lock same key. For locking and opening there is one cause. The heart itself is our lock. Our Manas itself is the key. If you turn it to the world side, it is bondage. If you turn it towards God, that is freedom. That itself is Mokṣa. So whatever actions we do, work will be transformed into worship. Think that God is doing everything through this body. We must do every karma for the pleasure of God. The body, the senses, Manas and Buddhi are tools. With these tools He works in every kind of way.
Students! At times Manas runs off in agitation. Through the speed of that agitation it is thrown into disorder. At such a time you must not turn Manas this way or that, just as it happens to be. You must not come to decisions. Sit calmly. Think of God. Or keep reasoning on that very matter. Keep inquiring, 'Is this right, is this wrong?' While you inquire whether what you thought of is good or bad, a change comes over these thoughts. You must not follow it in the body the very moment the thoughts come. Inquire within Manas. Make the body sit to one side. When Manas and the body both join, a work is completed there, as when the negative and the positive both join. So we must not enter into the work. We must inquire well. Take time. In this way the hearts of students must not be all bumps and jumps. They must not be unsteady. I have said it many times. study for steady. The study we do is for being steady, and not for anything else. That is the steady citta of the true student. Students must learn well, and through that we must develop discipline too, and through that develop devotion too, and carry out our duty as duty.
