In plain words
In the Veda too, ‘na karmaṇā na prajayā dhanēna tyāgēnaikai amṛtatvamānasu’: not by wealth, nor by …, nor by power, nor by rites such as yajñas and yāgas is immortality … to us. By sacrifice alone is immortality attained. That is what the Veda proclaimed. Great souls who taught the spirit of sacrifice, gave yoga to the …, and removed the disease called worldly care, have gone on being born in the land of Bhārata, … in age after age.
Though Śukrācārya, his guru, stood in the way, Bali made his all … to God. Śukrācārya came up to Bali: ‘Disciple! He is no ordinary person. He is Śrīman Nārāyaṇa in form. And you have set out to give Him a gift. What an ignorant man you are! What a fool you are!’ … he reviled him. Bali rejoiced: ‘Gurujī! The one who has come is Śrīman Nārāyaṇa in form. The hand that … the whole world, the hand of refuge that granted refuge, the hand that … the Śrīcakra of Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, when it comes to me asking, “Give!”, what other fortune … than the fortune of giving! The hand of Nārāyaṇa who said “Give” is below. My hand, the one that gives, is above. Ah! How … I am! Do you teach me, who have earned so great a fortune, to say no? I will not obey your command.’ … Bali made the sacrifice. Such a holy gain, such a holy chance: to what man does it …? Whose is this? It is all his own. In the world there are gifts of land, gifts of cows, gifts of gold, … gifts, gifts of cloth, and ever so many other kinds of gifts besides. But it was not … that Bali gave away. He gave himself, his very self. He did not give things as a gift. He made himself a … to God. This itself is the offering. Through this very offering, Viṣṇu and Bali both took on one single form. That is ‘brahmavit brahmaiva bhavati’. The two became one. In so holy a sacrifice, be it guru, be it mother, be it father, the very standing in the way … you need not cling to at all, Tulasīdās taught. Bali showed it.
The heart You gave me, O Lord, that heart I offer, O glorious One. Truly, what else shall I bring to worship Your feet? I join my palms to You; do receive it.
