In plain words

In this way the number of colleges is growing today, but today's education is taking the shape of something useless. Learning that is of use to the world is not to be seen at all. In today's system of education the number of students keeps growing, but the value of education keeps shrinking.

Looking only at the growth in the number of these institutions and students, our leaders congratulate themselves that education is progressing in Bhārata. What use is it to learn any number of subjects that do society no good and cannot bring about the progress of the country and the unity of the nation?

Achieve National Unity

Today national unity is not to be seen at all. Independence we have won, but unfortunately we are failing to achieve unity. Day by day bad qualities such as hatred and envy are growing among men. “In men today, a boorishness with no fear of sin and a demonic nature with no love of God are growing. Because humanness is thus being crushed in men, danger is coming upon world peace.” Are all who have read and learnt to write educated people? Is learning without right Jñāna and good deeds good learning? Today the learning of the Āryas has been suppressed, and evil learning is spreading. Satya, Dharma and every good deed have become warped and are wasting away. A sacred nature is not to be seen in the people. Wicked practices have increased. The root cause of all this is simply that men today have lost “love of God, fear of sin, morality in society”. So humanness rests on our conduct.

Students! In Bhārata every atom is sacred. You owe Bhārata a great debt. So you must offer your services to this Mother Bharata, win Her grace, experience Ānanda, and try to share that Ānanda among many. Students must develop this broad outlook. Bhakti and faith are essential to man. Divinity lies imperceptible within humanness. Only he who has made this imperceptible, unmanifest Divinity manifest is a true individual.

“Only what teaches good qualities, good learning, steadfastness in Satya, Bhakti, discipline, the fulfilment of duty and the like is true education. It is such learning that the student must acquire.”

Discipline is essential for students. The students of today are the ones who will uplift the Bhārata of the future. You must consider which path the students who are to become such ideal examples are following today. You must have love for the country and keep the country's progress in view. Students today try to pursue their studies keeping only these two as their aim: happiness and Śānti. But students do not know what happiness means. They think that merely eating, sleeping and passing their days in comfort is happiness; this is just a kind of Ajñāna.

Need one be born a human being at all to enjoy this little happiness? No, no. Beasts, birds and wild animals too enjoy such happiness, do they not! For man to long in this way to enjoy happiness, pleasures and riches is truly the same as a disease. This happiness cannot be had merely through objects. True happiness is found only in mastery of the senses, in Ātma-jñāna and in the Ānanda of the Ātma.
