In plain words
The meaning of a word is itself padārtha. Now, there is the word ‘chair’; the meaning of this word chair is the chair itself. The whole world is made of meanings joined to words! So everything in the world has come into being as padārthas. A word without a meaning is not to be found in the world. You may say ‘a flower of the sky’. But there is no such thing! Then how did this word come about? Well, this is not one word, it is a compound. ‘Sky’ is one word, ‘flower’ is another. They have put these two words together. The meaning of words made by putting two words together is something else. A word without a meaning is not to be found in the world. So the word ‘God’ has come about. If He did not exist, how could it have come about? What does not exist cannot come about. You may argue, ‘He has not appeared to me.’ But He is appearing all the time. ‘Paśyannapica napaśyati mūḍho’: he keeps seeing the world. And he says he has not seen it. Is this not foolishness? What form is the world's? Is it not God? So you are seeing God in the form of the world. This is what the Bhagavad Gītā called ‘the Viśvavirāṭ form’. What is viśva? Viśva is the world itself! So what is the Viśvavirāṭ form? The form in which all forms are one is the Viśvavirāṭ form. So the world itself is the Viśvavirāṭ form. We make no effort to recognise subtle meanings like these. We bring in arguments and false arguments, use our cleverness, and develop this into all kinds of wrong meanings. How far does your cleverness go? That mind of yours is not steady. Can a feeling that comes from such an unsteady mind be steady? Arjuna himself, who had such great power of intellect, who had renounced all attachment and carried out his duty, said, “The mind is restless indeed, Kṛṣṇa.” Are you greater than Arjuna? Is your cleverness greater than Arjuna's? Today you may have studied everything, an MBA, a Ph.D. But Arjuna had no MBA and no Ph.D. Is taking these paltry degrees greatness? These are not great learning. He received the degree called the grace of God. “Śruṇvantu viśve amṛtasya putraḥ,” they said. ‘You are a son of immortality. You are My devotee,’ He said. “Manmanā … madbhakto”: ‘You are My devotee,’ He said.
