In plain words
To believe foolishly, on the strength of one's cleverness, that the work one does is right is not conscience. When you go deep and enquire properly whether this is right for me, for this society and for my friends, or not, your conscience will answer you rightly. Individual conscience is a conscience bound up with selfishness. Not the conscience of the individual: we must enquire into the conscience whose form is the whole. We must enquire into the Fundamental conscience. We must enquire into the conscience that belongs to society. We must develop so broad an outlook through our education, and through it set about enquiring whether the things we do are good or bad.
To win in the game of life, practise good thoughts, good conduct and good reflection
Students! You have given displays of many kinds. In the sports and games you have won a fine name for many wonderful feats. What are these games? Only football, volleyball, cricket, things like these? These are only games of objects, games of the senses. Only physical games. These games are not what matters most. Yet these too are needed in the world! ‘For happiness here, the learning that brings gold; for happiness hereafter, the learning of Brahman’: these are learnings that belong to this world, so we must take part in them too. But these games are not the chief ones. Life is a Game, play it. This is the big game. Life itself is a great game for you. To pass in this life and win a good name, you must enter into good practices. Good reflection, good thoughts and good conduct are your true discipline. If you want to play tennis or cricket, how much practice you must do! Only when you have practised in this way do you pass in that game. The one who passes is able to receive prizes of various kinds. In the same way, to win a good name in this game called life, to hold to your ideals, to attain divinity, you must practise good thoughts, good conduct and good reflection in life.
