Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The father has a good job. We have plenty of money in our pocket. There are all kinds of comforts for travelling. While one is a fine young man, carried along by such circumstances, everyone says ‘Hello, hello’ warmly and becomes his friend. The father retires. The pocket is empty. The cars and the motorcycle stand idle. Where is this friendship then? When he sees you, he does not even say goodbye. This is not friendship. Friendship is what is joined with Prema from the heart. It must stay steady at all times. As long as the pond is full of water, frogs gather there in thousands. When the water in the pond dries up, not a single frog comes there. Modern friendships are like this. This is not true friendship. However many problems, hardships and sorrows befall you, you must never let go of friendship. Such an eternal friend is God alone! God is always with you, in you, around you, above you, below you. That is the true God. But unfortunately no one is making the effort for such a friendship.

All that is fashioned from the seen will one day vanish!

In this physical, impermanent, transient, unreal world we display an impermanent love. Outward things are not secure at all. That is why it was said, ‘Yad dṛśyaṃ tan naśyam.’ All that is fashioned from the seen will one day vanish! The joy the Gopīs gave this physical world we enjoy today in the custom called ‘gobbiḷḷu’. The gobbiḷḷu came from the Gopīs. This day of Sankrānti is the day when the sisters and brothers of a family live with great love and friendship and share this friendship with others as well. That is why in olden days they arranged scenes suited to it and showed the strength of their love.
