In plain words
That safety is not lodged in the building's head, that is, in its top, nor in any other part of it. Yet the foundation never grows proud, thinking, “This whole building rests on me.” Whether someone describes it, praises it or runs it down, no fame comes to the foundation, and no loss. But that the whole building rests on that foundation is a plain Satya that all people know, and know by experience. In the same way, in the mansion of life the first storey is brahmacarya. The second storey is gṛhastha. The third storey is vānaprastha. The fourth storey is sannyāsa. Many people build all four of these storeys. Some build only three storeys. Some build only two storeys. But no storey can stand without a foundation. In this mansion of life, those on the first storey are the very embodiments of brahmacarya. So,
You who are students have to lay a safe foundation for the building of your life. These foundations are humility and obedience, morality and character. On the safety of these four rests the building called our future. Unfortunately, the seven sins that grip and torment the country today have grown rampant.
Conduct must suit the costume
The first of them is commerce without morality. Then, in order: politics without honesty, education without character, worship without sacrifice, wealth without toil, science without humanness, and Bhakti without steadiness. These seven great sins grip and torment the world. On the day there come together commerce with morality, politics with honesty, the educated man with character, farming joined with toil, observance with sacrifice, science, humanness joined with virtue, and steady Bhakti, on that day alone will the country be a festival every day, with green garlands of leaves at its doors, chirping with joy and laughing aloud.
