In plain words
Kṛṣṇa is running. The Gopīs: “Kṛṣṇa! Kṛṣṇa! Wherever You go, Your mother will catch You. There is one place where Your mother cannot see You. We know it. Come there and hide. No mother can catch You. Which is that place, do You know? Our heart. In our heart there is darkness. You too (You are the dark one!) are black. So if black Kṛṣṇa hides in a dark heart, Your mother will not see You. We will have joy. And You will escape the blows. Both of us will have joy. Kṛṣṇa! Come at once, enter our hearts,” they begged. With such feelings they longed for Kṛṣṇa.
Once the subduing of Kāḷiṅga was taking place. The Gopīs came. “Kṛṣṇa! You have subdued Kāḷiṅga. Where? Not in the Kāḷiṅga pool. In the Mānasa lake that is our heart, the Kāḷiṅga of our sense vāsanās is living. Upon him You are dancing the tāṇḍava. But we cannot see it. The Kālindī is black. The poison is black. You are black. The sky is black. Kṛṣṇa! We do not ask You to clean the dirt of our Mānasa lake. We do not ask You to make Your beautiful form white. We do not ask You to purify the Kālindī pool. But make the sky behind it white. When the white sky stands behind as a screen, Your black form will be seen clearly. Make our heart white. Then Your beautiful form will be seen clearly in our Mānasa lake,” they prayed. The Gopīs longed for feelings full of such inner meanings. In nothing at all had they any selfishness. There was nothing for them but Kṛṣṇa.
If we go on telling the Bhāgavatam like this, even some years will not be enough. Many people have not understood the principle of the Bhāgavatam rightly. To understand the Bhāgavatam, it is very necessary that the devotee's heart be pure. Bhakti is the chief principle.
