Passage 9

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Though everything moves, God is not one who moves. He is eternal and unchanging. Among men, at birth one is a baby, at ten a boy. At thirty, a young man. At seventy-five, an old man. Everything is bound to change! But God alone has neither beginning nor end, does not change, and is there always! He has no end at all, and no birth at all. When there is no birth, where then is an end? That eternal One is the Guru.

God has no taint of any kind; He is pure and holy

‘Vimalaṃ’: vimala means one without any taint. Pure, holy. He has taken on no taint of any kind, whether of the world or of any other sort. Whatever reaches Him, all of it is ash! Whatever you throw into fire, put in good or put in bad, it turns all of it to ash. It always stays pure. Burn a corpse, burn firewood, burn iron, burn gold: fire stays fire, holy as ever. That is why they called Him ‘vimalaṃ’. Who is so stainless and so pure? He is the Guru.

God, being everything Himself, remains unmoving

‘Acalamu.’ Many things keep changing. The earth keeps turning, over and over. Not only does it turn round itself, it also goes round the sun at a speed of sixty-six thousand miles. Yet however much it turns, we do not see it. We think the earth is still. No, no; the earth is turning. The moon is turning. In this cinema picture, sixteen pictures turn every second. But He is unmoving. He is not one who turns. Everything is in Him. He Himself is everywhere. Where is there to turn? To go there, one has to move from here to there. He is there, and He is here. ‘Here, there, wherever you look, that One alone dwells, in love, in the Ātma.’ So, ‘niścalaṃ’, ‘nirmalaṃ’.
