In plain words
Vikramāditya's heart melted at the sight of that scholar. At once Vikramāditya sat down in meditation. He did very severe tapas. However long he did it, the Yajñapuruṣa did not appear. ‘What is the fruit of all the sādhana I have done? What use to me is a life that cannot earn God's grace?’ So saying, he drew his sword. ‘Is this life? Is it only eating every day, living, fattening the body? It is not this. The one supreme goal of life is to see God!’ and: “O Yajñapuruṣa! If You do not grant me Your darśan, I will offer my life to You,” he prayed with all his heart, and was about to strike himself with the sword. At that very moment the Yajñapuruṣa appeared and snatched the sword from Vikramārka's hand. “Vikramāditya! This is rashness, not sādhana,” He said, and then: “Where am I? ‘ahaṃ vaiśvānaro bhūtvā prāṇināṃ deha māśritaḥ prāṇāpāna samāyuktaḥ pacāmyannaṃ caturvidhaṃ.’ To set about killing Me, who am within you, on one side, and on the other to ask Me to appear: is that the mark of sādhana? I am right within you. This is nothing but a rājasic act of daring; it is not sādhana,” He said. So a devotee must not set out on rash acts like these. “The right path to attain Me is the path of Prema alone! Not this rashness. Whatever you do, whatever you see, you must feel all of it to be filled with God. When you do so, Work will be transformed into worship. But this brāhmin, for sixty years, has only been uttering the sounds without knowing the meaning of the mantras (mechanically); he has not been inviting Me with true feeling from the heart. When it is ‘the mind on the mantra, the longing on Me,’ how can the vision come? Whoever worships Me, offering Me mind, speech and deed, to him I reveal Myself. This is trikaraṇa śuddhi. Only the oneness of thought, word and deed matters to Me,” He said. When a man has not the strength to do this, he must obey My command and do whatever I command. He must give no room to doubt. When I say, ‘Cut your throat,’ he must cut it without fail. That very obedience will protect you,” He said.
