Passage 2

In plain words

Even the scholar who has read all the scriptures and Purāṇas, even great souls who spread Satya and Dharma, are spoiling for many arguments and quarrels because of this narrow heart. Even in such great people, in the educated, in the discerning, in the intellectuals, these narrow feelings arise, and through the divisions of "my religion, my doctrine, my guru" they turn the unity that is in the world into separateness. Great men and intellectuals who divide unity into multiplicity are growing in number, but the pure ones who recognise the unity within the multiplicity are not to be seen in the world today. Evil thoughts, wicked schemes, bad qualities and bad conduct are increasing more and more in the people of today than in former times. What is the reason for this? When you go deep and inquire well, it becomes clear that animal nature still remains in man.

He alone is a true man who leads his life without wasting even half a minute of this sacred time. This precious time is no one's friend. The wheel of time cannot be changed. Everyone must follow time, but time follows no one. Kāla, the Lord of time, is swallowing time. Time is swallowing the body. The master of the body is time. The master of time is Kāla. That Kāla is the very form of God. The man of today forgets that One whose form is time, and wastes his time only for worldly, physical pleasures and enjoyments. The ultimate reality itself is reflected in the apparent and in the practical. Without the ocean there are no waves; without waves there is no foam. This foam depends on the waves. We think of them as separate, ocean, waves and foam, but the water in all three is one. The quality of water is in all three. Coolness, whiteness and sweetness: these are the qualities of water. All of these have arisen from the ultimate reality. These beings have arisen from the ocean of grace that is Sat, Cit, Ānanda. The life-breath of these beings is divinity. Those who recognise the unity of these three can experience true Ānanda. This has been called waking, dream and deep sleep. The one who experiences in waking is one person. The one who experiences the dream scene is the same person. The one who experiences in deep sleep is the same person too. Though waking and deep sleep differ in time, place and experience, the person is one. But leaving the ultimate reality and longing for a worldly life, believing that this practical world is the right life, it is like seeing nothing but a dream scene and being deluded. These dream scenes are never true. The mansions and terraces seen in a dream are not there when you open your eyes, are they? In the same way, all the pleasures and pains experienced in this practical world are dream scenes too! Yet these too have arisen from the ultimate reality. You must not think the practical and the ultimate are different. Only when the unity of the two is recognised is humanness understood.

It is the mind that gives man pleasure and pain. The mind is the root cause. ‘Mana eva manuṣyāṇāṃ kāraṇaṃ bandhamokṣayoḥ.’ When the mind is the cause of this bondage and liberation, the mind is the cause of our freedom too. If people in today's world are to leave this unrest and attain the eternal, true Śānti, no new society or youth society of any kind need be founded for it. No new religion is needed. No new system is needed. Only one thing is wanted. Men and women with pure minds and hearts are needed. Only when there are men and women pure in mind and heart will that kingdom go on as a divine kingdom, a divine rule. But these virtuous men and women can stand firm only when that kingdom has both purity of mind and the wealth of character. If this purity of mind and good character are to grow, to shine, to blossom, their basis is morality. Without the spiritual, morality will not stand. So the walls of morality must be built on the very foundation of the spiritual. On the walls of morality we must lay the roof of purity of mind and the wealth of character. That is the security of life. It is not enough merely to build walls. It is not enough merely to dig foundations. Only when the roof is laid on top does life become complete. That is why:

Self-confidence foundation Self-satisfaction wall Self-sacrifice roof Self-realisation life.

If we are to experience such a life, first of all the foundation must be secure. The spiritual must be right. All the honour and fame of our Bhārata have grown through the spiritual alone. From time without beginning, the glory and repute of Bhārata have rested on its spiritual wealth alone. Because many great souls, many noble women, chaste mothers devoted to their husbands, pure-hearted people and sons with divine feelings were born here, Bhārata has been able to earn so meaningful a name.
