Passage 5

In plain words

Cha! I am a man; such qualities must not come to me. Thinking, “I am merely akin to the beasts,” you must pit yourself against the beast. Today we must study learning of this kind, which takes up the challenge.

All the children of today must become messengers who spread Śānti in this country, which is collapsing in unrest. And not messengers of Yama. Be avadhūtas. If you are avadhūtas the world will be put right; if you are messengers of Yama, you will torment everyone. We must bring honour to our sacred learning. We must bring honour to the … we are in. We must do our duty properly. That is what I said yesterday, when the girls were here. A governor has … bodyguards. What are they there for? To protect the governor. Here, the governor is devotion. Only when devotion has duty on one side and discipline on the other, the two as its guards, will devotion grow. It will stay well and safe. But today there is no devotion at all. Then why duty and discipline? When there is no governor, why ADCs? A burden on the earth. What we must do today is protect our devotion. Now all devotion has turned into an ocean. What is that ocean? It is the ocean of saṃsāra. That is the ocean. In the ocean there are whales and sharks. There are cruel beasts of many kinds. We must not fall into this ocean. We must fall into the Ocean of Milk. All this is an ocean of salt. It is salt water. But we must immerse ourselves in the Ocean of Milk that is the Ānanda of God. That is true learning. I bless you, that you will put such learning to good use and show a true example, and I bring my discourse to a close.
