Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

What did it is the inert body. What made it do it is the mind. The mind itself is the root cause. We must set the mind on the right path. Whatever is done, the fault is the mind's; there is no fault of the body. Every suffering must be one connected with the mind.

In Shirdi Baba went on teaching Jñāna many times, in many kinds of ways, through many parables. God is everywhere. He is in all beings. Īśāvāsyam idaṃ sarvam. Lakṣmībāi Dāṅgle was a wealthy woman. Wealthy as she was, she settled in Shirdi and cleaned the ashram. In this way she took up a life of service. One day she got a chance. She fell at Baba's feet and made namaskāra. 'Lakṣmībāi! I am hungry,' He said. Ayyo! When He asks with His own lips, how could one stay? Asking Him to wait a little, she ran off home. I offer naivedya to a photo that does not ask. Am I failing to give to God who has asked? So thinking, she went home and quickly made chapātīs. In those days Baba used to eat. He used to eat chapātīs this high. He would fold each chapātī four times and eat it in one go. She brought the chapātīs on a plate. 'They are very good. They taste very good,' He said. A black dog came wagging its tail. When He called it near and was stroking it, the dog ate up all the chapātīs. Lakṣmībāi was watching. 'Baba, is this what You do? You said, hunger, hunger. Because God opened His mouth and asked, I made these chapātīs with so much affection, with so much Bhakti and śraddhā, and brought them. Right before my eyes You are feeding them to a dog. What sin have I committed? What fault is there in me? While I was making these chapātīs, did any evil thoughts arise in me? No. I made the chapātīs wholeheartedly, with Prema. Why did You insult me? Is it just?' In this way, with all the right one has over a father, Lakṣmībāi went on speaking. 'Lakṣmībāi, sit down. I have eaten it all. My stomach is full,' He said. 'Baba! How am I to believe it? I saw the dog eating. When You say You have eaten, how can I believe it?' Then He said: Man asks, saying he is hungry. Beasts, birds and animals cannot ask, saying they are hungry. They too are hungry. They cannot say it. They too are God's vision itself. When the animals eat, it is as if I have eaten, is it not?
