In plain words
Once, when Bābā was living in Shirdi, there was a devotee called Dāsugaṇu. He worked in the police department. When Śrī Rāma Navamī and Muharram fell together, Bābā used to celebrate the two festivals together in Shirdi. There some difference kept showing itself between Hindus and Muslims. At that time Dāsugaṇu came to Shirdi on duty. Then Bābā called Dāsugaṇu to Him and spoke with him: "Dāsugaṇu! You know how to sing well, don't you? Sing a song," He said. Dāsugaṇu sang beautifully, a joy to the ear. Then Dāsugaṇu prayed, "Bābā! Could You not keep me right here?" "Who has said no? You may certainly stay. Is this My house? Nothing is My own. You too may live here. But will you live here?" So Bābā asked. I will certainly come and stay right here. After that he forgot his word. The moment the festival was over, he left his duty and went to his own village. As he was leaving he bowed: "Bābā! For three years now I have been sorely troubled over a promotion. I am troubled over it only for the sake of honour, not for money, not merely for the post," he said. "So you will come only if the promotion comes?" said Bābā. "If He grants the promotion, I will come and stay right here," he said. "All right, go," He said. He came back from there and joined duty, and within a week the promotion came. He became a Circle Inspector. After that, in this work, he forgot the word he had given Bābā.
One year went by, then two. Then he came again, on duty for Muharram and Śrī Rāma Navamī. "Dāsugaṇu! Have you forgotten the word you gave?" Bābā asked. "I have not forgotten, Swami, I have not forgotten. I hope to work well and become an S.P.," he said. "Very well, go," He said. Before he came back, gold articles stolen from somewhere were lying in that station. In the end the S.P. came and held an enquiry. Where did all these things come from? Who brought them and put them here? "I know nothing," said Dāsugaṇu. In the office you are in charge of, how did all these goods come and gather without your permission? "You stole them yourself": that was the charge that fell on him. Many enquiries were held into it. Then Dāsugaṇu recognised the Satya that all these slanders were falling on him because he had broken the word he gave; he resigned, came to Shirdi and stayed there for good. However many ways God protects him, man, by forgetting the word he gave, brings troubles of many kinds upon himself.
