Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, Bharata and Śatrughna, we who came from Ayodhyā; Sugrīva, who came from Kiṣkindhā; Vibhīṣaṇa, who came from Laṅkā: we are six brothers.’ Without Sugrīva, no trace of Sītā would have been found. Without Vibhīṣaṇa, the slaying of Rāvaṇa would not have come about. All powers are the powers of God. Even a twig for picking the teeth comes in useful. Is a man with life in him of no use in the world! We must hate no one. We must set no one apart. We must make everyone one. How sacred is the principle of unity! That is what I tell the children now and then: unity in diversity.

Beings are many but breath is one Nations are many but earth is one Jewels are many but gold is one Stars are many but sky is one

In all men, divinity is one and the same. If we are to recognise divinity, we must know karma and upāsana. Bhajan, dhyāna, japa: all these are only signs of Bhakti.

But we are unable to achieve what we set out to. What is the reason for this? The reason is just that the words that rose from the prompting of Bhakti are not put into practice in us. We think we are devotees of Rāma. Are we practising what Rāma practised? Rāma kept His father's word. Are we doing it? He believed in the unity of brothers. Are we doing that? Not going back on the word He had given, He gave up the kingdom and lived in the forest. Are we practising that? Do we keep to our Satya? Do we abide by our promise? What does it mean, being devotees of Rāma? Devotees of Rāma in name, but there is no partnership in the treasure. When will it come? Partnership comes only when we conduct ourselves by what He practised, what He wished, what He commanded. We call ourselves devotees of Kṛṣṇa, but are we practising Kṛṣṇa's commands, Kṛṣṇa's thoughts? We are not practising them. How can you be a devotee of Kṛṣṇa? They call themselves Sāī's devotees. Who is following Sāī's command? For so many years they have been living here. So many discourses they have been listening to. Right here they have set up home, permanently. What are they practising? Not even a little of a quarter of it are they practising.
