In plain words
For man, faith is breath: viśvāsa is śvāsa. One who has no such faith is merely a corpse in form.
An example. What we experience as real in daily life. As long as the in-breath and the out-breath are there, this is Śivaṃ. That is, auspicious. The moment this in-breath and out-breath go, it is śavaṃ. Which is Śivaṃ, which is śavaṃ? Our prāṇa itself is Śivaṃ. The absence of prāṇa is śavaṃ. We think Śiva means the form a sculptor carved, with the Gaṅgā set on His head and a trident in His hand; that form we take to be Śiva. Our prāṇa itself is Śiva. Īśvaras sarvabhūtānāṃ. Īśvara dwells in the form of the breath. He alone is God. So Divinity is everywhere. It is possible for us to see it in every way. In his speech a boy said, "Satyaṃ vada, Dharmaṃ cara." "One must speak Satya. One must conduct oneself in Dharma. This is not easy, it is very hard," he said. That is wrong. Speaking Satya, practising Dharma: there is nothing easier than this. To speak Satya means this: to say that Swami came at four o'clock and began the talk early; that is Satya. How easy it is to say what is, just as it is! For this you need not think at all. No deliberation is needed. If you want to tell Asatya, you must deliberate a great deal. You must turn this Asatya into something that can be believed. You must come out with any number of crafty tricks. How hard it is to tell a lie! To speak Satya is very easy. People think Satya is hard. It is a great mistake. We have grown used to Asatya. Because of this Asatya we are used to, we think Satya is hard; the world too has kept giving room for this. This weakness is in every man. A small example. In a house a person died. You go there: "What is this, sir? Whatever is the cause of being born, that same is the cause of passing away. He was born; he died. Along with birth there is death too." If you talk like that, they get angry with us: "Who is this fellow, talking so harshly?" But go to that same house: "Mother! What illness did he have? Which doctor saw him? What medicine did they give? Why did such a misfortune happen?" If you enquire like that, they say proudly, "Sir, he came and asked after our welfare and went away." All this is petty satisfaction. None of these are things for us to take note of. Death too comes along with birth. On a railway compartment "return" is written. Wherever that compartment goes, it has to return. So this body is a compartment.
