Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

I Myself will do that work. Conduct yourselves as you have been told. For conducting yourselves, zero. For asking, hero. What are today's devotees like? For work, parār; for food, tayār. They do not follow the commands given in the least. First of all we must bow to the command, put it into practice and try to experience at least one or two. Practice, rather, is what matters. The Rāmāyaṇa, the Bhāgavata, the Qur'ān, the Bible: these books were not written for pārāyaṇa. They were set down for practice. But today there is no practice. We are doing pārāyaṇa. For many years they have been doing pārāyaṇa of the Rāmāyaṇa. They are doing pārāyaṇa of the Bhagavad Gītā. They are doing pārāyaṇa of the Viṣṇu Sahasranāma. What use is it? The pārāyaṇas are racing away. What is the pārāyaṇa done for? Put at least one into practice. That itself is enough. Because a ladleful of the milk of a good cow is enough; what use is a potful of donkey's milk?

All of you, put it into practice. See that there is no excessive talk. Spend life calmly. You must not keep up excessive friendship with one another. Do not give up Prema. If any help is needed, you must help. help ever hurt never. It is enough if you put even one into practice. Besides, the words you speak must be sweet. Only when it is so will there be some fruit, more or less, for our having heard, for having read books, for having lived in the āśrama. Living in the āśrama. To those who are there and to themselves, to both, they cause only strain. Why, then, should one be in the āśrama? To get rid of strain, one should seek the āśrama. If you sit here, all kinds of attachments come. It is not … to the āśrama. One must be without strain. One must live without strain. Among the things told every day, many are what we have already heard. Even when what has been heard comes again, we must reflect on it once more and put it into practice.
