In plain words
He who believes that past, present and future are all one is the jīvanmukta
There are two, called ‘Videhamukti’ and ‘Jīvanmukti’. Both of these are very important in Vedānta. What is Jīvanmukti? It is to believe, even while wearing a body, that all is one. Past, present and future, all three are one! Before, it was a tree. From that came this seed called the present. In the future the seed will turn into a tree. The past is a tree, the present a seed, the future a tree. The unity of the three is one and the same! Without that tree the seed would not have come. Without the seed the tree will not come. This is the oneness. He who believes in the oneness of these three is a jīvanmukta. He who looks upon hardship and comfort alike is a jīvanmukta. Whether good people sing his praises or bad people revile him, he who regards the two with an even mind is a jīvanmukta. He who holds blame and praise and every slight as one is a jīvanmukta. He who holds poverty and wealth to be the same is a jīvanmukta. All of them are only passing clouds! Nothing here is permanent. He who recognises this truth is a jīvanmukta. He has no sorrow. For the nature of his mind rests in oneness. Such a one alone is a jīvanmukta. Then what is a videhamukta? In the videha these same qualities are there. What is the difference between the two? This one has a body. That one has no body. Videha means one without a body. That is, the body is there, but he does not keep his concentration on the body. He knows nothing at all of hunger and thirst. In this principle of Jīvanmukti, Videhamukti is just its reflection. King Janaka had the name Videha. He had no body-delusion. That is why he was called Videha.
As long as the body-delusion lasts, pleasure and pain cannot be escaped
As long as the body-delusion lasts, the mind cannot escape pleasure and pain. When there is no attachment to the body, there is no attachment of any other kind. That is amanaska. There is no mind at all. Where would thoughts come from for one who has no mind? It is only when there are thoughts that there is a mind. This is cloth.
