Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

How then can he receive the Prema of God? Only when we give something are we fit to receive something else. Only when we go to a shop and give the shopkeeper ten rupees does he give us a handkerchief. When you do not hand over ten rupees, he does not hand you the handkerchief. That is what the Vice-Chancellor said. How simply the Upaniṣads have been teaching this matter!

The body is the leaf, the heart the flower, the mind the fruit, and tears of joy the water

You need not give God anything that is not in this world.

A leaf, a flower, a fruit, water; to one who has Bhakti if it is true that You yield, then may You weigh as much as this tulasī leaf!

So saying, Rukmiṇī put one tulasī leaf on the scale to weigh Śrī Kṛṣṇa. It is no mārēḍu leaf or bilva leaf. You need not search for where a mārēḍu tree may be or where a bilva tree may be. The body itself is the leaf for us. What is this flower? The flower of the heart! You need not search anywhere for this flower. You need not be put to any trouble. The fruit is the fruit of the mind. How should that fruit of the mind be? In what way are you offering the flower you offer to God? Not every flower that comes to hand serves for the worship of God. You must take the flower, clean it thoroughly of the insects called lust, anger, greed, pride and jealousy that have settled on it, and offer the flower to God. What kind of fruit must you offer to God? You must not pluck just any one of the fruits that grew on the tree and give it. They must be sweet fruits, in a good, ripe state. Sweetness must come into that fruit. That is Prema. You must offer fruit filled with Prema. And as for water, it is not tap water, Gaṅgā water, well water or river water. Your tears of joy are the water. For this you need not take any pains. You will have seen many people. When great joy comes, water flows from the eyes. At a time of great sorrow, water does not come to the eyes.
